The Shreveport Police Department is committed to expert and professional training regimens in various fields ranging from de-escalation and mental health to appropriate use of force.
We will be offering expanded training related to a variety of mental illnesses that officers encounter in the field. To ensure public safety, the Shreveport Police Department must maintain a presence in the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Therefore, training must be spread out across the department roughly 26 times a year.
This initiative will empower officers with more effective deescalation techniques and a greater awareness of mental illness, enabling them to better handle calls involving mentally ill subjects and intervene more quickly with medical care when appropriate.
